The Souq Waqif Market in Doha, Qatar

It’s probably no exaggeration that on my quest to see everything, I’ll probably manage a quarter of the countries on this planet during layovers. South Africa, Germany, Ethiopia, Amsterdam, U.A.E., and now Qatar.

I had just a few late-night hours to explore the Souq Waqif, a restored ancient market that draws tourists into a sort of “Middle East lite.” But considering I was walking through a strange city by myself in the hours before midnight, this was the perfect way to get a tiny taste of Doha.

Spice markets, antique jewelry, pottery, rugs, and colorful lamps line the shops, and the walkways are crowded with amazing restaurants where tourists and locals alike sip drinks and smoke hookah in the warm night air.
